Looking Back !

He was looking at her from the chair in the patio , which gave him a perfect view of her room through the painted color glass window . She was dressed in a bright blue kurti .

By the looks of it she was searching for something frantically . He looked on , observing her and the way she moved around . After a lot of banging and shoving , it was evident that she had found what she wanted from the small smile playing around her lips . It was the earrings which he had gifted her for her last birthday . She pushed a bunch of bangles onto her wrist and hurried around the room collecting what she needed for the day in office .

He looked back to the day he had met her first . Bang , Bang , Bang ! It was all what they called ‘Love at first sight” . Then , His  marriage with Malini was a year old . Malini was his first love , their wedding had taken place , against odds . He was from an orthodox iyengar family and Malini was a what they called ’ a non-brahmin ’ . She had simply won over his family with her sweet smile and calm demeanor . Despite the caste differences , both families blessed them as one with the ‘atchathai’ . According to him , Malini was the only woman he was born for . But this was before he met Akaansha .

There were so many things which changed in him and around him because of her . He had a notion that , there can be nobody as beautiful and valuable like Malini . He was such a workaholic and spent many hours striving in the bank , where he worked . His long work hours were always a topic of contention between him and Malini . Meeting Akaansha had pushed all his prioroties behind and she pushed Malini from the throne of his heart and sat firmly over it .

He began cutting back on his work hours to spend more time with her and take her where ever she wanted . There was no place in the locality where , they had not taken a stroll or chatted for hours . Malini was not aware of the depth of his feelings for Akaansha and he chose not to tell her too . His love for her , icreased manifold within a short span of 3 years . During which he enjoyed shopping for her , with her . This was also a new one , he hated shopping with Malini . Those shopping trips made him tired and unwell for days to follow . But with Akaansha , it seemed such a pleasure . To watch her look enthusiastically at things in tiny shops , to hold her hands and feel the warmth in them , to get her what she wanted and make her eyes shine with happiness .

As years grew, he had developed a wonderful relationship with Akaansha and their love bloomed and blossomed into a huge tree .

Akaansha became the center of his existence . He wanted to grow old with her and die her in arms , where he knew he was well loved and cared . He stood up and went to the kitchen for a snack , which he knew his wife , would’ve made for him . She knew his needs exactly and catered to them with loving care.

Suddenly, the clanging sound of the calling bell brought him back to the present . He hurriedly gulped his chai and went to open the door . It was the courier guy with a large envelope .

“Yes ! May i help you ?”  .

He noticed the quizzical look the boy gave him .

“oh ! yes , i’m 85 years old . Quit staring at my silver cotton candy like beard “ he thought to himself .

The boy passed on the huge envolope and told ” Sir , This is for Ms . Akaansha Ajit and please sign here “

He shakily drew the pen the courier boy gave him and scrawled my signature on the small space provided.

He suddenly noticed the small box with the heading ‘relationship’ just below the signature space .

He smiled to himself and scratched out the words

“F-A-T-H-E-R” .

Damn it , his handwriting was going from bad to worse .

If you have read through till this , thank you .

happy father’s day , which happens to be on June 17th :)
