I suddenly awoke from my fitful sleep due;an acute pain in my chest and i had a great difficulty in breathing . I wrenched my eyes open and surveyed my surroundings . I was in a large room with floor length windows , and doctors were shouting out orders and nurses were running around with a lost look on their faces . The entire atmosphere was gripped with gloom and death .;

It took me a while to understand what i was doing in this place , and then I remembered . Ah ! the Spanish Influenza Epidemic . The last thing i remembered was being wheeled out of the cottage along with my mother who also suffering from the same terrible disease .;

I’m Edward Anthony Masen , aged 17 .

I looked around searching for my mother , tried to get up from the bed . ;

” Son , please don’t strain yourself “;

I turned towards the voice and came to face with a man so handsome that my eyes hurt to look at them .;

i shot him a puzzled look , he smiled at me in a fatherly way .;

” I’m Carlisle Cullen . I’ve been looking after you since you had come here “;

” Then , you must Know my mother , Elizabeth Mason . She was brought here along with me ;”;

As soon as I asked this question a felt a subtle change in his expression and guessed what had happened .;

” Ah ! Your mother was not as lucky as you . She passed away two days ago and you were in a delirious state which made it impossible to inform you of what had happened ”

I felt so crushed . My mother was the only living relation I had and I had lost my father long ago.;

As if sensing my grief , the doctor laid his hand on my shoulder and bent close to me .;

” The death had brought an end to her suffering , son . Please allow your mind and body to rest . You need to your stamina to recover . “;

I looked into his compassionate face and felt an odd feeling of;camaraderie towards this person whom I had met just 10 minutes back . I noticed his eyes were in a peculiar color of molten gold with a dark brown iris . I saw my own bedraggled face reflected from the depths .;

He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a ring which was all familiar to me . I felt fresh grief eating my insides and felt my eyes cloud over with tears . ;It was my mother’s ring , encrusted with diamonds .;

” Your mother asked me to give this to you ” I closed my cold fingers over the ring , which was the last object I had in memory of my mother .;

” Thank you ” , I said in a raspy voice , I felt my body slipping into oblivion and then I thought that i din’t have much time before I joined my mother forever .;

The last thing I remembered before the I was engulfed with darkness is Carlisle studying me with a curious look on his face .;

When I regained;consciousnesses , I din’t know for how long I had slept . I noticed that I had been shifted to a new room which was semi-dark and the only source of light was from the street lamp which was flickering through the bedside window .;

My breathing was;labored and the constriction in my throat was growing making it difficult to breath . I felt the death’s dark iron fist close in on the thread of my life ,;threatening to snap it . Suddenly I felt ;someone watching me through the darkness . The figure emerged from the shadows , it was Carlisle . There was an odd glow to his skin even in the darkness . I felt mesmerized . I wanted to thank him for his kindness before i died . He came closer to my bed and a sudden feeling of fear seized me .

Up close I saw that he had predator like look on his face and a dangerous glint in his eyes . I wanted to get up and run away from him but my body was too weak to respond to my brain .;

He bent close to my face and his cool , sweet breath fanned across my face . ” I’m sorry edward . This is the last choice I made to save you ”

I was confused and dint understand what he was referring to . He looked deep into my green eyes before I felt a raging pain in my neck . Carlisle had moved with inhuman speed and bit into my neck .

I felt my neck snap under the impact . It felt like my whole body was on fire . I screamed out loud ; unable to suppress my agony . I felt the fire travel from my neck , all through my body , coursing through my blood vessels .

I did not Know for how many days I thrashed around , withering with pain and screaming in agony .

Many Many eons of time later , I felt the pain recede from my finger tips and the burning was localized in my chest . Finally I felt my heart stutter and come to a halt .;

I could smell a decayed smell that was like that of rotting bodies . I opened my eyes and saw a rainbow of colors in the sunlight streaming through the window . I searched around the room and found Carlisle surveying me with a slight smile . I dint understand what had happened to me .

” What the . . ” Before i could complete the sentence , Carlisle interrupted me and shoved a mirror in front of my face .;

I recoiled with shock from my own reflection . My once green eyes were in a shade of blood red and there was an aura of deadly beauty around me . The sun light streaming from the windows fell on my hand , and I noticed like there were a thousand diamonds under my skin . I studied myself with;fascination and glanced over at Carlisle who was observing me with a bemused expression .;

” What have i become ? What have you done to me ? ” I got up from the bed and moved towards Carlisle with an inhuman speed which surprised me .;

” You are a vampire now “;

Carlisle’s statement shook my core and I stared at him blankly .
